Ubuntu 6.06 and VLC Media Player

Here's something that took me awhile to figure out: trying to get Ubuntu to play .avi (movie) files. There are instructions for how to do this, but it was incomplete for a noob like me. I was trying to install VLC media player, which had this step on their web site:
Add to your /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb ftp://ftp.videolan.org/pub/videolan/ubuntu dapper universe
Ok that's great, add that line to the sources.list file. But, how do I do that? A quick search in the Ubuntu forums said pretty much the same thing, but with no explanation on exactly how to do this simple file edit. Finally, I found the command I needed:
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
So, now I was able to add the lines I needed to the file, installed VLC and can now watch .avi movies on Ubuntu! I'm glad to have figured this out, but just proves that it'll still be awhile before Ubuntu really hits mainstream...
